Current Engagement Opportunities with the OST/SOST
Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Fast Track Action Committee
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced the new Fast-Track Action Committee (FTAC) on Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) in September 2023. Under the authority of OSTP’s National Science and Technology Council, the Committee evaluated the merits of and concerns about different types of mCDR and shaped relevant policy and research on safe and effective marine CO2 removal and carbon sequestration. The committee included experts from more than a dozen federal departments and agencies and it fulfilled one of the recommendations of the U.S. Ocean Climate Action Plan (OCAP) released in early 2024. More information on the FTAC can be found in its charter linked below:
The Biden-Harris Administration and NOAA released the National Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Research Strategy on November 12, 2024. The strategy outlines how the U.S. government can accelerate marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) research in a way that is safe and effective, and will help to determine if the emerging approaches are viable climate solutions.
